Vestry makes decision regarding use of Same-Gender Blessing Rite at Holy Spirit

The Vestry held their special meeting December 2nd on the use of the Blessing of a Lifelong Covenant, including Same-Gender Relationships. All but one of the members were able to attend; one was out due to illness. Approximately 30 other parishioners were present to witness and listen to the Vestry's discussion. Rev. Terri began with a prayer and then outlined what the vote would be about, the specific provisions that were given by Bishop Brookhart for use of the Rite, and reviewed the discernment process that began in September.

Senior Warden Bob Wattenberg then thanked all those who had taken time to participate in the Wednesday night conversations, had offered their thoughts to Vestry members, or had participated in the open sharing that happened after services on November 24th. Over 100 formal responses were received ranging from strong opposition to the desire to go further than the current Rite. Of these responses, 88% were in favor of holding the Rite at Holy Spirit, 10% opposed, and 2% were undecided or didn't care. Common threads were expressed: appreciation for the process used to discuss the subject and thanks for the opportunity to express an opinion. It was clear that a great deal of thought had gone into the responders' opinions and for this Bob gave thanks on behalf of the Vestry.

Terri then asked Vestry members to share what they had heard and learned during this listening and discernment time, after which each member could speak more specifically about where they stood and why. It was clear that the Vestry had prayerfully considered parishioners' comments, had spent time studying scripture, reading the resources provided from General Convention, and probing their own thoughts on the matter. Once everyone had a chance to speak, the following motion was made and seconded: "The Vestry of Holy Spirit approve the use of the Rite 'Witnessing and Blessing of a Lifelong Covenant,' including same-gender relationships, as authorized for provisional use by the 77th General Convention of the Episcopal Church (July 2012) in accordance with the guidance provided by Bishop Brookhart." The underlined part was an amendment to the original motion. The vote was taken and all hands were raised in support of the motion as amended.

The Vestry and Rector understand that not everyone will agree with this decision, and they respect those who came to a different conclusion. If you have any questions or want to know more, the Rector and Vestry members would appreciate speaking with you.
