There's a Place for you at Holy Spirit
Worship is the foundation of our life together, but there is much more, too. You'll find many ways to meet others, find fellowship, explore your faith, help things happen and support our neighbors near and far. Through an array of involvement opportunities, Holy Spirit works to be a welcoming and warm community. You're invited to join in.
Here is an almost comprehensive list of our church's groups and ministries:
Coffee Hours
Signing up to host a coffee hour is a fun, one-and-done way to get to know people in the congregation and for them to get to know you. We gather for coffee and treats in the Parish Hall after every 10:15 service and sometimes after 8 am Sunday services. Sign ups are on the kitchen door, and we have mentors who are happy to work with first-timers.
Act With Mercy & Compassion
To respond to greater need and uncertainty in our community, we’ve launched this new effort to do something positive together as a parish – in addition to all the ways Holy Spirit people already contribute to the life of our region. In this first year, we’re partnering with the Missoula Food Bank. Look for regular ways to contribute, lend a hand or join a work crew as pull together to do some good.
Supper Club
Our vibrant Supper Club brings people together for meals in members’ homes, a restaurant or even one of our city’s parks for a picnic. It’s all about lively conversation and enjoying good food. Sign up in September, or contact the church office and we will put you in touch with Kate Laney, the Supper Club coordinator. It is always possible to sign up as an alternate during the year.
Holiday Market
Festive and beautifully presented, our Holiday Market is held in early November. Donations are an integral part of what’s on offer, including antiques and collectibles, small pieces of furniture, all types of jewelry, Christmas decorations, boxes of Christmas cards and intact wrapping paper, CDs and DVDs, and handicrafts. Everyone is welcome to help out at this signature Holy Spirit event, and it’s fertile ground for meeting others and making friends.
Craft Group
The Craft Group meets in the spring and fall to create items to sell at the Holiday Market. Simple craft skills are all that is needed. Come join the group for conversation and relaxation while creating. Join us upstairs in the church office. Contact the office and we will put you in touch with Sue Lowery, Craft Group coordinator.
Spring Market
Our annual Spring Market of rummage and much more has a reputation of being among the best in town! Think of the Spring Market during the year as you find things you no longer need, and come and help us during Spring Market Week in early May.
Godly Play
A core group of teachers and helpers creates the “step-out” worship for children that happens every Sunday at our 10:15 service. If your interests include helping younger church-goers nurture their spiritual lives through stories and play, you’re invited to join in. Learn more.
Social Concerns
The will to help others and to live out our Baptismal Covenant motivates the wide-ranging work of our Social Concerns ministry. Its impact reaches from sponsoring Alms Sundays that spotlight local social service organizations to ongoing support for Hellgate High School students, a partnership with the Rio Grande Borderlands Ministry and much more. You are invited to bring your heart for social justice to the many efforts of our Social Concerns group. Learn more.
Family Promise
Family Promise is a ministry to unhoused families living at the Missoula Meadowlark Shelter, while they search for housing, offered by 20 some local churches. It provides and serves evening meals to those families and helps stabilize them once they are in housing. If you are interested, contact Carla Mettling (406-203-7177) or Kate Laney (801-440-3811).
Creation Care
As Christians, we are asked to care for creation and to be good stewards of the Earth. Genesis 2:15 - “The Lord God took the man (and woman) and put them in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.” Holy Spirit’s Creation Care ministry offers tools for living sustainably and a calendar of engaging events, from wildflower walks to a trip to Freeze-Out Lake, to help us appreciate and care for the gifts of our planet. Join in! Learn more.
Habitat for Humanity
Work teams from Holy Spirit regularly contribute to Habitat build days in Missoula. Activities range from slinging a hammer to making lunch for the Habitat crew. Watch for notices about upcoming ways to get involved. Everyone is invited.
Small Group Learning and Prayer
Holy Spirit offers a range of book discussions, Bible studies and opportunities for spiritual exploration and prayer throughout the year. If leading small group classes is a passion for you, we invite you to discuss possibilities with Rev. Gretchen or parishioner Zara Renander. Learn more.
Music
Choral music has become a defining feature of worship at Holy Spirit. Our all-volunteer choir of over 30 members sings weekly at the 10:15 a.m. Sunday service September-May, and for special services throughout the year. Learn more here about our choir and organ.
Ushers, Intercessors, Lay Readers, Chalice Bearers and Crucifers
You’re invited to take part in our Sunday services through any of these vital ministries that offer a different window into worship. Duties are scheduled to match your calendar, and being part of these teams offers many rewards. Contact the office for further info.
Altar Guild
Preparing the altar and communion elements and caring for vestment and linens is the work of the Altar Guild. Its members are close to the church’s worship life and many find spiritual rewards in their duties. To inquire about the Altar Guild, please contact the office.
Wholly Fun
Wholly Fun is charged with tempting Holy Spirit parishioners with regular social events, everything from a fall Pumpkin-carving Potluck to a night at the Missoula Paddleheads ballgame. It’s a serious mission for this creative group that is always looking for new members and new ways to set the stage for friendship and fellowship.
Receptions
The silver is out. There are white linens and flowers. Platters are filled with homemade cookies and treats. And when it’s all arranged and ready, it can become – for a grieving family – a nearly holy space. If you are inspired to join in with this important, occasional ministry, let the office know.
Parish Development
Members of the Parish Development team work to welcome newcomers to Holy Spirit with regular gatherings and features about new parishioners in the Spirited Times. The group oversees the church’s nametag program, online directory and creates the annual stewardship campaign. It’s a great pursuit for anyone committed to the growth and vitality of our church community.
Worship Enrichment
While we rightly celebrate Episcopal traditions, at Holy Spirit, through our Worship Enrichment Committee, we look for ways to illuminate our worship with new approaches. From creating “poetry Sundays” to mounting a play instead of the sermon and more, Worship Enrichment designs inspiring ways for us to change up the experience of Sunday service several times throughout the church year.
Other Events
Other recent one-time or recurring activities have included a garden tour, a labyrinth walk, our annual church picnic, Blessing of the Animals (early October each year), and Advent wreaths and crafts. Watch the calendar for more opportunities.
