Friends’ News for January, 2023 

Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Community Celebration is Monday, January 16th at St. Anthony’s Parish, (6:00 pm-8:00 pm), with a community meal to follow.  Our keynote speaker will be Akilah Deernose, an Attorney for ACLU Montana. Akilah is passionate about building an inclusive community centered on the awareness of social justice issues and is dedicated to ensuring meaningful access to opportunity, justice, and equal rights. 

Legislative Action Day at the Capital:  Friday, January 20th:  Put your faith into advocacy and join Families for a Livable Climate, Faith and Climate Action Montana, Montana Interfaith Power and Light, the Sierra Club, MEIC and a coalition of other environmental organizations in Helena for a day of collective climate action at the Capitol! Events will begin at 11am in the rotunda with a rally, speakers, a luncheon, and the opportunity to speak with legislators in the afternoon.  A Missoula bus is being organized.  Email Caleb to sign up:   

Faith and Climate Action Montana presents: Dr. Elizabeth Schenk:  Cultivating Steadfastness in a Time of Planetary Crisis. Tuesday, January 24, 6pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Dr. Schenk is Providence’s National Executive Director for Environmental Stewardship.  For over 25 years she has been recognized as a pioneer in managing medical care with a view to its broad range of environmental impacts, including that of climate change.  Dr. Schenk recently attended COP27, the United Nations Climate Change Conference held in Egypt.  

Truth to Power faith-based legislative advocacy group:  clergy and faith leaders across our state are joining together to bring faith-based values and perspectives into our legislative processes.  Together we are tracking bills, contacting legislators, and building talking points on various issues. Wrestling with the Truth of Colonization: A 5 session workshop sponsored by Common Good Missoula looking at the deep impacts of colonization on indigenous peoples, the resiliency and movements of resistance they have had, the colonizer tools of ongoing oppression, and the ways in which we can move towards healing, conciliation, trusting relationships, and allyship in the future.  Led by a team of both indigenous and settler trainers and open to all Common Good partners and friends. Winter dates TBD.
